WHAT'S UP IN THE KENNELS?

MACPUP 525

June 11th, 2011: Runtt21 and Prit1 have announced the release of their latest E17 (enlightened) baby, Macpup 525, a little beauty that's based on Puppy Linux 5.2.5 "Lucid Puppy", which is, to quote from Runtt's thread, "an official woof build of Puppy Linux that is binary-compatible with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx packages".

I'm posting now from this super-fast and lightweight OS on a Dell Latitude D620, C2D@1.83GHz/80GB/2GB/Intel Express Integrated Graphics @ 1400x900/Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02), using kernel module iwl3945/DVD-RW, in case that info is of interest to anyone with similar specs.
I run this as a frugal install to USB flash drive and connect via WPA-secured wireless to a D-Link router.

I've also run the live CD on a 20" 2.4GHz C2D Mac desktop with 3GB RAM, but both systems are so speedy that i really couldn't be bothered trying to make a performance comparison between them....i'm no techie reviewer, anyway.
Macpup 525 connected automatically to the internet via ethernet on the Mac and required no setup at all.

No problems encountered so far with the smooth running of this sleek'n'chic puplet...it's a pleasure to use such a light and lovely little 'greyhound'. No doubt about it, Enlightenment is truly a beautiful, elegant window manager and with so many ways to customise it, users can have as plain or as pretty a desktop environment as they wish.

For your choice of apps that aren't included in the iso, the excellent Quickpet install manager is parked right there on the iBar, ready to download and install items such as Gimp, Pidgin, Wine, Google Earth, Songbird, VLC, additional browsers and various drivers, if required.

Screenshots below show my desktops with three of the themes available and, as Runtt mentions in his thread, the 511 and 520 themes will work on this too, so check out all the goodies in his stash.

The Macpup iso is only a 155.12mb download from its homepage; alternatively, it can be downloaded here, where you'll need to enter username: puppy and pawsword: linux.

Congratulations dudes, a beautiful job yet again!

LEGACY OS 2

2nd June, 2011: The eagerly-awaited upgrade from Legacy OS has now been released by John Van Gaans (forum member, john biles).

Many users have been keeping their paws on the pulse of its development, urging John onward and upward with his popular distro.
As the name suggests, and more detailed info can be read in his thread on the subject, Legacy OS 2 is targeted at users of hardware that is several years old, so don't throw the old box out the window or into landfill!

Legacy OS 2 has an almost unbelievable number and variety of apps for all manner of uses and for this reason, at almost 700mb, a full hard disk install is recommended.
(unless, like mine, your machine is a little younger than its target market and has about 2GB RAM - i've run it successfully in RAM as a live CD.)

I'm a real Puppy-hopper - you know...so many Puppys/Puplets and so little time - so i have a number of different derivatives and versions on CDs, flash drives and both frugal and hard disk installs barking around the place, because i cannot have just one favourite.

I think Legacy OS 2 will have to be squeezed in amongst them because it's a beauty, so carefully thought-out and implemented and, for a legacy operating system, it has some unexpectedly up-to-date drivers. I use wireless from laptops through a router to my adsl connection and Legacy OS 2 gave me no trouble at all configuring a WPA connection with the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Network Adapter.

The laptop used is a Dell Latitude D620, C2D@1.83GHz/2GB/80GB/DVD-RW/Integrated Intel graphics @ 1400x900, so it's middle-of-the-road specs, maybe not an ideal test-bed but the thing just flew and all the apps i opened did their thing as expected.

The one unusual thing that i noticed was that the system didn't find my battery or power source when plugged in, but apart from that, i really, really like it.

Anyway, have your own great experience with it - visit John's thread (linked above) for detailed info and download it either from his SoftPedia link, or from this server. It's a 698.16mb d/l and if you download it from here, please remember to enter puppy as username and linux as pawsword.

Congratulations on a a really fine piece of work, John!
